Description

As creators, we interpret the world around us through our craft. However, our craft is also our business. Join us for a conversation about the moments when representing our authentic journeys becomes in and of itself, advocacy and the challenges and rewards of that authenticity.

Participants will:

  1. Hear from alumni artists about their journeys with these projects

  2. Learn strategies for balancing both the art and business side of creativity

  3. Brainstorm what factors to consider when looking for opportunities and collaborations

Light refreshments will be provided.

Panelists:

TRISHES is a project by Trinidadian native Trish Hosein ‘11, created to express Freud's constructs of self (the primal, conscious and spiritual) through spoken word, live looping and vocal effects. Her undeniably original songwriting, fleshed out by hip-hop beats and pop hooks, examines human struggle through an anthropological lens.

Hosein began touring the U.S. and abroad after graduating from the Berklee College of Music, and has opened for acts like Damian Marley, Vic Mensa, K. Flay and Neon Hitch. She’s played at festivals like Cannabis Cup, SXSW, CMW, Tune In Tel Aviv and Women’s Redrock festival, collecting critical acclaim from Knoxville TN, Bangkok, Thailand. Her dynamic live show awes audiences as Hosein takes them into her museum-like mind and creates a sonic blanket with her unique sound. After seeing Hosein perform Marie Claire, Allure and Cosmopolitan writer Shyema Azam called it "Enchanting," continuing, "It wasn't hard to see that this one woman show was super talented, making her own music and expertly layering her voice over catchy tunes as she went along."

Hosein's debut multimedia EP "EGO" focuses on the entities that define humanity while addressing the current cultural and political climate. Each focus track is aided by an art collection, video and spoken word piece. In lieu of a traditional promotional tour, Hosein is currently holding a series of experiential art and performance pop ups throughout the US called the “Ego Experience.” When not working on music, Hosein helps resettle refugees in the Los Angeles area, studies anthropology, and works on visual art projects like the 2019 Adidas Nite Jogger mural displayed in Los Angeles.

Vincint ‘13 is a fiery pop artist with powerhouse vocals and moves to match. His songs tear at your heartstrings while you dance to the beat and get lost in the melody. The breath of fresh air that pop needs. This is VINCINT.

Holly Palmer ‘93 has recorded, toured and collaborated with David Bowie, Dr. Dre, and Michael Bublé and released five critically acclaimed albums of her own. Holly toured the world with Bowie on vocals and percussion and appears on six of his albums. She has also toured with Cee-lo Green, Seal, and Idina Menzel, and contributed vocals and writing to many film scores and commercials. Holly’s latest project, A Family Album, is a jubilant set of songs written over Skype and recorded in London and Los Angeles. Each song is a snapshot of her family and the unexpected joys and challenges she and her husband have experienced raising their son Maceo, who loves music and has cerebral palsy. A Family Album earned a glowing five-star review from The Mail on Sunday in the U.K. and includes “Family” the end title song in the recent Paul Rudd/Steve Coogan Film “Ideal Home.” A portion of proceeds from A Family Album will go to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation which works to improve the lives of those with CP and their families today. Lindsay Kay ‘13 is a 26-year-old award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and artist. On October 5, 2018, Kay released her debut, full-length album For the Feminine, by the Feminine – an 8 song meditation on femininity and womanhood. The album was made top to bottom by a team of women and feminine-identifying people, with Kay at the helm as the album’s sole songwriter and producer. Every role, from studio musicians to engineering to mastering to album artwork design to PR to music video crew and live performance crew and band members, was and is filled by a woman. The music video for her song “Too”, directed by visionary filmmaker Anastasia Lebedeva and art directed and styled by Kay herself, has won Best Music Video at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival of Hollywood and the Calcutta International Cult Film Festival, and is a finalist in the Feel The Reel International Film Festival, the Newport Beach Film Festival, the SHORT to the Point Film Festival, the Moscow Shorts Festival, the Independent Talents International Film Festival, and the ARFF Barcelona International Awards. The album, which explores themes of consent, toxic masculinity, reclaiming feminine power, and more, has been widely received and critically acclaimed. PopDust says of her performance: “Kay's voice is spacious, often unwavering and smooth like ripples across the lake's surface. Even in addressing such culturally-important and personal issues, she is comforting and graceful. ‘I'm not your silent muse,’ she sings, a quiet roar that quakes the ground on which she walks.”
